Short Diphthongs: Mrs. Peterson’s Milluk word | má·qʷɫaⁱ | ‘bird egg’ is found only in Jacobs’ slip-file dictionary, where the Hanis word is | má·qʷɫaɩ |.   Because we see the Milluk word only once in Jacobs’ work with Annie Miner Peterson, we do not get to see the word as | má·qʷɫai | which would no doubt have been another way that she would have pronounced this word, as with other words where there is a long and short version of the diphthong that ends this word.
